In the major indices, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) closed with a loss of 228.48 points or 1.87% at 11,984.61, while NASDAQ index finished lower by 50.7 points or 1.84% to 2,701.02. The S&P 500 (SPX) closed down by 24.91 points or 1.89% to 1,295.11.

Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 1856.90 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 383.60 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 1650.30 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 1061.00 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 206.60 Crore and Rs. (677.40) Crore.

European markets, which opened after the Indian market, traded on a negative note. Key benchmark indices like – CAC 40 was trading lower by 0.82% at 3,961.03, FTSE 100 declined by 0.62% at 5,900.44 and in Frankfurt, DAX index was trading down by 0.60% at 7,088.68.
The BSE Metal index was at 15,666.92 down by 206.97 points or by 1.3%. The main losers were JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 938.85,2.93%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 596.80,2.59%), Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (Rs. 131.45,2.12%), Jindal Saw Ltd. (Rs. 193.95,1.77%) and Sesa Goa Ltd. (Rs. 274.95,1.75%).
The BSE Realty index was at 2,120.47 up by 14.03 points or by 0.67%. The main gainers were Sobha Developers Ltd. (Rs. 271.00,1.67%), Parsvnath Developers Ltd. (Rs. 30.70,1.66%), Unitech Ltd. (Rs. 38.05,1.47%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 228.50,1.42%) and Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd. (Rs. 114.20,0.79%).
On the corporate front, shares of Infosys Technologies Ltd fell 0.25% at Rs 3,087.45 after reports came in stating that the company is looking for acquisitions in the health care space.
